John F. Whitaker

John was born in Massachusetts, spent his formative years in a Chicago suburb, but has had the good fortune of settling in Alabama, where he has helped to raise three children and is helping to raise two grandchildren (wishing for more). He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received his law degree at Cumberland Law School. He is licensed in both Florida and Alabama.

John had the good fortune of spending a year clerking for the late Judge, Robert S. Vance Sr. on United State Circuit Court of Appeals (1978). He is general counsel for the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama, local counsel for Carmike Theaters, DHL and Lampton-Love Company. He has been honored to be included in the publication known as the Best Lawyers in America (1994-present), Alabama Super Lawyers(2007-present) and AV Rated by the Martindale-Hubble publication. He is a member at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover. He has served as past chairman, Legal Aid Society of Birmingham (2002); past president, Notre Dame Club of Northern Alabama (1985-88), Academic Counsel, Spain Park High School (2004), and the St. Thomas More Society of Greater Birmingham (2005-2006). John has served on the board of directors for the Greater Birmingham YMCA (2001-2002); chairman of the Birmingham Bar Association Technology Committee (1998); as a member on the grievance committee (2005-2008 and 2008-2010) and the elder care law committee (2011)

More than all of this, John is proudest of his wife, who spends much of her time caring for the grandchildren, and his children. He came from a family of loving parents and hopes that he has been the same to his own children. He loves family gatherings, be it around the dining room table, at the beach or on family trips. He is proud that his family goes back some nine generations to the mid 1600’s in Massachusetts, and that he has children and grandchildren to carry on this heritage.
